Abraham Joshua Heschel, in his book ‘The Sabbath: It’s Meaning for Modern Man’, describes Shabbat as ‘a palace in time’.  Time for Heschel is the ‘dimension in which human is at home with the divine; a dimension in which man aspires to approach the likeness of the divine.’ This is in comparison with the dimension of space which, Heschel states, has no quality ‘in common with the essence of God.’
