Thoughts on Film for Holocaust Memorial Day
Written by Movement for Reform Judaism Wednesday, 25 January 2012
Here, two of the Movement's rabbis look at Holocaust Memorial Day. Each year on 27th January the world marks Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD). HMD has been held in the UK since 2001 and the United Nations declared this an international event in 2005. 27th January was chosen as the date for HMD because it was on this date in 1945 that the largest Nazi killing camp Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated. You can watch the films on the Movement's YouTube channel, or click on the images below to view each film.

Rabbi Dr. Jonathan Romain who is himself the child of a Holocaust survivor, on how we remember and commemorate the Holocaust as a community and as a country. |
Holocaust Memorial Day provides an opportunity for everyone to learn lessons from the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides and apply them to the present day to create a safer, better future. On HMD we share the memory of the millions who have been murdered in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur in order to challenge hatred and persecution in the UK today. Hundreds of events will take place across the country, some at Reform synagogues and communities. Visit the Holocaust Memorial Day website for a full list of planned events.
Yom HaShoah
National Holocaust Memorial Day has the object of focussing on the Holocaust and other genocides together as a society. The Jewish community has been very involved with this at national and local level, but Yom HaShoah is the Jewish Holocaust Memorial Day and it still remains very important for the Jewish community.
