Liberal religion has done far too little to stand up to the fundamentalists within its own ranks

My bête noire is fundamentalism, that fearful and sometimes disgraceful distortion of faith which has done so much damage to the standing of religion over the last 50 years.

At the very beginning of December, on one of those days when freezing rain meets wet snow, I made my way to Leeds to talk to the Jewish Society.

I was met by the four students I know best at Leeds and we had an early supper together.  They took me on to Hillel House where I led a workshop on Jewish identity.  At the end of the workshop I went round the group of twenty or so students and asked them to complete the line:  “I am a Jew because …”

Sermon for the Dedication Of Menorah Synagogue's New Building, Saturday 29th November 2008. Sidra Toldot.

I found the idea of a day trip to Auschwitz distasteful.  I was wrong.  A fortnight ago, as part of a programme organised by the Holocaust Education Trust, faith leaders from Britain’s nine faith communities went with one of the Trust’s regular charter flights of 6th formers and their teachers to the place which still casts a giant shadow over Jewish history.
