Chagigah 2012: New Look for Reform Biennial
Friday, 20 January 2012
The Movement for Reform Judaism this week launched registration for its biennial conference under a new name: 'Chagigah'. Chagigah means 'celebration' and organisers say this reflects the spirit of a joyful, fun, uplifting, spiritual, family-friendly gathering which will take place in Daventry from 22-24 June 2012.
Newly-appointed Movement Rabbi, Laura Janner-Klausner, who is leading the programming committee said: "As well as wonderful, music-filled services, we will be hosting inspiring speakers and educators, offering learning opportunities for all ages and levels. There will also be plenty of innovative and practical ideas and resources for people to take back to their communities".
Starting with Menorah Synagogue (Cheshire Reform Congregation), a series of films will be made by communities to build up excitement around the event. Inspired by the Olympic torch relay, they will each feature a shofar – the symbol of Chagigah 2012 - calling people around the country to come together at the event. You can watch the first film here on YouTube.
It is hoped that all members of the wider Reform community, including students, young adults and young families will be able to attend. In order to make the event accessible to all, prices for students and young adults have been heavily subsidized. A professionally-staffed crèche will be provided and a full programme of activities will be run by RSY-Netzer for 5-17 year olds.
Pam Goldsmith, Director of Community Development added: "We hope that representatives from as many of our communities as possible across the nation will attend Chagigah 2012. It's a golden opportunity for our communities to get together, share best practice, learn with each other, learn from each other and find new ways of celebrating their Reform Judaism".
Chagigah 2012 is sponsored by El Al. Zoe Bermant from El Al said: "We are delighted to be back at the heart of the UK Jewish community. El Al believes that investing in education, philanthropy, and culture will ultimately promote travel to Israel and for that reason we are very proud of our partnership with the Movement for Reform Judaism. We look forward to welcoming you onboard on your next trip to Israel."
