Congo Interfaith Month

PrintE-mail

The Congo Interfaith Month of Prayers takes place from 18th July - 15th August.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has seen a humanitarian crisis on a vast scale which has lasted over eleven years with no end in sight.

The idea of a Congo interfaith initiative was first proposed by Vava Tampa, the founding director of Save the Congo in 2008. After almost two years of discussions and campaigns, the idea was picked up Rabbi David Mitchell of Radlett and Bushey Reform Synagogue and with the support of Bishop Platten of Wakefield, Rev. Lusa Nsenga-Ngoy and Father Paul Graham of St Monica’s Church, the idea was re-invigorated and July- August 2010 chosen as the first Interfaith Month.

During this month, it is hoped that people of faith from across the nation, in their own respective congregations, will act as catalysts to move the UK and other major aid donors to take a more pro-active role in addressing the root cause of the human tragedy overwhelming the Congo and to work hard to help restore peace, security, justice and human dignity in the Congo.

A number of our rabbis signed a letter earlier in the year drawing attention to the plight of the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Click here to read the letter.
