Women of the Wall: Urgent action required
Tuesday, 30 October 2012Two weeks ago three members of religious rights group Women of the Wall were arrested for praying at the Western Wall, or Kotel, in Jerusalem. Women of the Wall leader and IRAC Chair, Anat Hoffman had been holding prayers for Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan at the Wall when she was arrested for 'disturbing public order' and placed in prison overnight. Her crime was to sing the Shema and wear a prayer shawl – practices forbidden to women by the Orthodox rabbinate, which controls all services at the site, but not by Israeli law. Director Lesley Sachs and Board member Rachel Cohen Yeshurun were also arrested for the same offence.
SWESRS celebrates its senior members
Monday, 29 October 2012Shabbat Bereshit saw two members of SWESRS honoured for their contribution to the community. Emeritus Rabbi Henry Goldstein led warm tributes to Mildred Isaacs, who celebrated her second batmitzvah at the age of 83 and to Ian Rodin, who celebrated his 100th birthday at SWESRS. The service was a celebration of the contribution to the community by senior members of SWESRS showing that age has never been a barrier to either of them.
