Holocaust Memorial Day 2015

Each year on 27 January the world marks Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD). HMD has been held in the UK since 2001 and the United Nations declared this an international event in 2005. 27 January was chosen as the date for HMD because it was on this date in 1945 that the largest Nazi killing camp Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated. It has special significance this year, marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation.

Unique art exhibition comes to EDRS

The most recent artist to grace the walls of the Woolstone Gallery at Edgware and District reform Synagogue (EDRS) with some unique pieces of art is Carole Smollan, who is showing a collection of miniature torah mantles. Carole describes these as a collective memory, a weaving together of her life’s artistic work in textile metaphor.

Kehillat Kernow supporting Cornish cemetery restorations

On Tuesday, 6 January, the Board of Deputies Heritage Limited was granted £13,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to preserve the Penzance Jewish cemetery site. This grant has brought together BOD Heritage with its Jewish and Cornish partners who have spearheaded a campaign for the past two years to acquire the necessary funds to make substantial repairs to the walls, entrance and Bet Tohorah areas of the Penzance cemetery.
