Dancing the Night Away: Kol Chai Hatch End Jewish Community Celebrates 25 Years
Thursday, 01 December 2011
Over 140 members and friends of Kol Chai Hatch End Jewish Community enjoyed a 25th anniversary celebratory dinner dance on Saturday 26th November at the Apollonia Restaurant in Stanmore.
Speakers included founder member Rosalind Astaire who recalled the flyer she spotted in a shop in Hatch End that led to the first services back in 1986. Originally organised by a group of 16 families the community rapidly grew to its current size of 300 family units and became a constituent of the Movement for Reform Judaism.
Former Head Teacher of the Religion School, Pauline Grant, spoke about the early days under the guidance of the late Rabbi Samuel Rodrigues-Pereira and the many educational, social and cultural activities the community has enjoyed.
Says Kol Chai's Rabbi Dr Michael Hilton: "The challenge of today is in some ways similar to that of the very early years of Kol Chai - to develop new structures for the next generation."
