Fifty Four have Freezing Fun!

PrintE-mail

The largest ever Netzer Venture Day to date took place on Sunday 7th December. The temperature was cold, but that did not chill the spirits of over fifty four chanichim (participants) from seven Reform synagogues in and around London.

The unprecedented numbers for this outdoors RSY-Netzer event meant that a number of parents from Maidenhead and Radlett and Bushey Synagogues were drafted in to help coordinate the afternoon of outdoor activities that took place at Tolmers scout campsite.

Once the group had been split into three groups according to age, the chanichim enjoyed three different activities. After climbing the equivalent of K2 or Annapurna on the ‘Rock’ climbing machine, they proceeded to master the art of target shooting on the very popular air-rifle range. This sport is part of the Olympics and we teach about the strict mind-over-body discipline needed to be on target. There were some surprisingly good shots, especially from the younger ones who were new to the sport. A new piece of apparatus was the high-ropes course, where chanichim had to negotiate different rope obstacles in the air, clipped onto a line for safety.

Around the final bonfire, with a cup of hot chocolate and some marshmallows, the young people had a great opportunity to meet other people from other Reform communities who were going on Sheleg, the RSY-Netzer winter camp, and Shemesh, the Reform summer camps. “The main aim is that our participants from the Reform communities come together, make friends, relax and have a good time”, said Jon Littman, the Youth and Community Worker for the Movement for Reform Judaism, “this helps them to remain interested in their own synagogue’s activities as well as national events, like Shemesh.” This event simply would not be possible without the huge effort of parents and leaders, and we would like to thank all those from RBRS, WLS, NWSS, Wimbledon, Maidenhead, Thanet and FRS who made the event a success.
