First ever Reform President of Leeds JSoc
Tuesday, 20 January 2009
Daniel Grabiner (19), a highly-involved member of RSY-Netzer since the age of 11, has been elected as President of Leeds University Jewish Society – a significant first for one of the UK’s largest Jewish student bodies.
Daniel Grabiner is currently a fresher at Leeds, studying economics and politics. He was brought up as a member of North Western Reform Synagogue (Alyth) where he has been involved in the choir, teaching at cheder, as a youth leader and in charity initiatives since the age of 5.
He is deeply committed to the youth movement of the Movement for Reform Judaism, RSY-Netzer, where he has participated both as a chanich (participant), and as a madrich (leader) for several successive summers, culminating in spending his Gap year in Israel on the Shnat Netzer programme.
He commented: “I ran for election because I wanted Leeds to be the best JSoc in the country and I think I was the one who could do that, with real passion, determination and drive. I wanted other JSocs to look to us for inspiration. I am working very closely with Adam Pike, chair of UJS.”
This election also takes place at a time when Jeneration is stepping up its presence on campus. Jeneration Students was launched in September 2008, offering a range of projects including the publication of ‘The Ultimate Guide to Student Survival’; a student space on Jeneration.org and the student rep scheme which now has 9 students working on their campuses across the country.
The Ultimate Guide to Student Survival includes tips on all aspects of student life, from how to survive Freshers’ Week and how to manage a limited budget, to J-Soc contacts, Hillel Houses and keeping kosher on campus.
