Harlow's New Torah Mantle in Full Colour
Monday, 14 November 2011
There was no sign of traditional maroon or blue velvet when Harlow Jewish Community’s rabbi unveiled a new Torah mantle.
Blues, reds and golds representing a sunset through a lattice-work cover the mantle which was designed, hand-painted and sewn by Buckinghamshire artist Yudit Collard-Treml, pictured left with Rabbi Irit Shillor.
Rabbi Irit Shillor, who commissioned the design for the scroll which belongs to her, said: "The book of Exodus commands us to decorate the scroll in fine materials with reds, golds and blues so I took that as the starting point. It’s absolutely fantastic, just how I envisioned it. It’s a beautiful addition to our community and a stunning piece of artwork; I’m sure it will delight us for years to come."
The community dedicated the mantle at a special Shabbat service.
