High Holy Days Events

A number of events will take place in Reform communities in preparation for the High Holy Days and over the festivals to help you have a more meaningful experience. These additional events include Jewish learning sessions, discussions, alternative services, film screenings and more.

Finchley Reform Synagogue
Finchley Reform Synagogue's Ten Days Scheme consists of adult study sessions on the theme of turning over a new leaf. Each session is independent and starts at 8.00pm.

Alternative services with Rabbi Howard Cooper will take place at Alexandra Palace on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This will be an opportunity to come together in an informal way and engage with the themes and prayers of the day in a personal and reflective manner. Each service will contain a mixture of traditional and modern prayers and study passages, discussion and inter-personal sharing, meditation time, traditional melodies and a sprinkling of humour.
A Yom Kippur afternoon study session will also be held at Alexandra Palace. ‘Time out of Time’ will be a time to reflect, through conversation and texts, on our journey through the day.

Hendon Reform Synagogue
Hendon will host a Torah Breakfast on Shabbat morning, Saturday 4th September at 9:30am with Rabbi Charles Emanuel on the subject of ‘What to Give, What to Take? Teshuvah, Tefillah, Tsedakah’. A choral Selichot service will take place that evening at 9.30pm followed by light refreshments.
Discussions for young people (ages 13-16 and 17-35) will take place on Yom Kippur afternoon with Hannah Weisfeld on the subject of social justice and Tikkun Olam and with Michael Slavinsky on ‘The Synagogue Through the Eyes of Young Adults’.

North West Surrey Synagogue
North West Surrey Synagogue will be holding an event before Selichot services on 4th September with a learning session on ethical wills. On 11th September, Shabbat Shuvah, the community will have a Lunch and Learn shiur on midrashim about Abraham and on Monday 13th September there will be a 'Spiritual Check-up', discussion using texts on teshuvah.

Newcastle Reform Synagogue
Newcastle Reform Synagogue will hold a special Selichot event which will begin at 19:30, with Havdalah and a chanukkat habayyit, as a new mezuzah will be placed on the front door of the shul. The case was made in Ethiopia by the people of the community supported in the shul's Kol Nidrei appeal. Over refreshments, there will be a chance to learn some High Holy Day melodies, followed by the Selichot service itself at around 21:00.
On Tuesday, 14th of September, Rabbi Barbara Borts will conduct a session called 'Preparing to Forgive: Others, Ourselves, God.' Through classical texts and modern writings, we can help each other to begin Yom Kippur with integrity and purpose.' Find out more at the synagogue website.
Sha'arei Tsedek North London Reform Synagogue
Sha'arei Tsedek North London Reform Synagogue will be having a Jewish meditation session on Yom Kippur afternoon and there will a creche throughout the day on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Find out more at the Sha'arei Tsedek website.
The Sternberg Centre
'Renewing The Soul', a High Holy Day workshop will take place at the Sternberg Centre in Finchley on Sunday 5th September focussing on spiritual reflection for the High Holy Days with Rabbi Judith Levitt and Esther Aronsfeld. It will be a day to reflect, remember and return to who we truly are using ritual, self-reflection exercises, creativity, text and guided meditation. Find out more about this workshop.
West London Synagogue
To guide us through the month of Elul every day West London Synagogue are posting a new passage on the synagogue website to help us spiritually prepare for the days which lie ahead. You can also opt to receive these passages by email.
The synagogue will be hosting some events aimed at young adults. On Thursday 9th September a second Erev Rosh Hashannah evening service and light dinner will be held followed by a bonus 'Torah on Tap' learning session looking at texts relevant to the Jewish New Year.
'Hookah in the Sukkah' will take place on Monday 20th September. Come lounge in the sukkah, enjoy the hookah pipe if that’s your thing, and partake in some delicious Middle Eastern treats, funky tunes and some good old fashioned lulav shaking.
