It's Time to Celebrate - Massuot Community Youth Awards 2010

PrintE-mail

Last year the Massuot Community Youth Awards were able to recognise and celebrate the achievements of over 80 young people and their adult helpers. Through the generosity of the Award sponsors we were able to give out over £2000 to Reform communities across the country. The Reform Movement and RSY-Netzer intend to do the same this year.

Frances Avery, from Menorah, who won the Tikkun Medina - Good Citizenship Award, with sponsor Emma Senitt of the Alan Senitt Memorial Trust. Frances won the award for her interfaith work.We need you to nominate young people aged 8-18 in 6 categories of Awards based on the concept of Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World). There are so many of our young people doing incredible work, in their synagogue, in their school and local community. No matter how small, if they fit the criteria of the Massuot Awards then we want to hear about them. There are also Awards for adults who help run youth activities and for innovative programming that engages young people. Winners will receive a medallion and £200 sponsorship for their project or community.

Some of last years winners included Sam Simmonds, aged 13 from Wimbledon who won the Tikkun Chevra - Good Friendship Award for looking after "every new child who joins the class at cheder till they feel confident and at home". He also set up his own stall at the synagogue Tzedakah Fair. His Award was sponsored by Pro-Zion. Another finalist was Jem Melcher, aged 15 from Sinai. He was nominated for the Tikkun Kehilah - Contribution to Community Award and received an Honourable Mention. Jem was highly commended for his outstanding work in his community. Another incredible winner was Frances Avery, aged 18 from Menorah, Cheshire. She won the Tikkun Medina - Good Citizenship Award, sponsored by the Alan Senitt Memorial Trust, for her work in running and developing materials for interfaith programmes.

So who will it be this year? Perhaps you know someone? Nominations are easy to make. There is a simple form that needs to be filled out, just tell us why you think your nominee deserves the Award.  Even if they are not selected by the Massuot panel as a finalist, being nominated is still a reason to celebrate and everyone will get a certificate. Nominations will be open from the 6th September. The forms should be on display in your synagogue, or available online at the RSY-Netzer website.

Some adjustments have been made since last year, we want to hear about anyone over the age of 25 who has given more than 12 years service in your synagogue for the benefit of young people. Also, the nominee and finalist certificates have a been upgraded to fully show our support and appreciation to all the young people from our communities who are going out and doing something for the benefit of this world. Let's celebrate all their achievements together.

The Community Youth Awards Reception will take place on Sunday 12th December at Sha'arei Tzedek - North London Reform Synagogue (formerly Southgate and District Reform Synagogue) 2pm - 4.30pm. Nominations open Monday 6th September, close Monday 1st November 2010.
