Kol Chai's Olympic torch bearers

Two Kol Chai - Hatch End Jewish Community - members have been Olympic torch bearers. Sarah Shephard, a 30 year-old sports journalist, carried the torch at Leeds Castle in Kent on the torch relay leg between Harrietsham and Maidstone on 19th July.

On 22nd July, Dan Grant, aged 27, carried the torch in Redbridge. Dan is an international 1-wall handball player. He competes individually to the highest standard (ranked number one in the UK). He also plays on the England team.

He is both the European and a world doubles champion. Dan is also the chair of the England 1-wall Handball Association (a voluntary role) and is passionate about getting young people playing the sport. He's pioneered 1-wall handball in inner-city schools, introduced the sport to more than 2000 young people, and encouraged four schools to take up the sport permanently. He has launched the first purpose built handball centre in London and is working with UCL to give more people sporting opportunities.
