The Leo Baeck College’s annual Summer Institute attracted the largest ever group of participants over an intensive three day seminar from June 30 –July 2nd 2009. Over 40 participants representing 15 Reform, Liberal and Masorti congregations included 14 rabbis and rabbinic students, five chairs of synagogues, six education directors and lay leaders from the UK, Germany, France and Denmark.

Rabbi Steve Greenberg with Rabbi Shoshana Boyd GelfandHere is a selection of their experiences:

"I loved the ability to exchange in a group without boundaries and the ability to really dig deep on issues and challenges.  I really enjoyed the explorations of texts and Jewish journeys personal and communal, an uplifting and valuable experience."

"I did not think it could be as exhilarating as last year, but it was. A good mixture of tachlis and text study".

"I met some wonderful, warm and wise people and rediscovered the joy, depth and meaningfulness of being Jewish.  The whole experience has been enriching and enlightening".

"The subjects covered were relevant and inspiring and left me with an urge to study and do something for my community".

Leading the seminar was Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg of the New York based CLAL organisation paired , Executive Director of the Reform Movement and previously Vice-President of the American based Wexner Training organization. Held each year by the College with the support of UJIA, the Summer Institute is designed to allow professional, rabbinic and lay leaders to reflect on the urgent and pressing issues facing their work as well as develop their own learning and skills through text based learning, cases studies and reflective development.

Rabbi Dr. Michael Shire, convener of the Summer Institute remarked:"this was the most incredible three days of learning and exploration for the leaders of our communities. Richly embedded in Jewish text study, these thoughtful and dedicated rabbis, professional and voluntary leaders will act to transform their communities in new and exciting ways."
