Limmud Conference 2008
Monday, 15 December 2008
Limmud Conference takes place at Warwick University from Sunday 28th December to Thursday 1st January and the Movement will be well-represented.
Daily egalitarian shacharit services will be lead by Movement Chief Executive, Rabbi Shoshana Boyd Gelfand with Danny Maseng, one of America's most popular and respected composers of contemporary liturgical and synagogue music. You'll be able to follow this great start to the day with a wide range of sessions.
Alyth's Rabbi Mark Goldsmith will offer two sessions: "Shadchan - Make me a Match" - on what we gain and lose by having lost the tradition of arranged marriages in mainstream Judaism and "I can't believe an organisation which calls itself Jewish would do that" on tough choices and ethical scope in Jewish businesses and organisations.
Rabbi Miriam Berger of Finchley Reform Synagogue will ask"Any ideas what we are meant to do here?" Questioning how different would society be if human beings knew their ultimate role in life. This will be an opportunity to come and study the sources to unpack the all-important question of the meaning of life.
As well as organising services, Rabbi Shoshana Boyd Gelfand will also run sessions on Talmudic stories of juggling work and family; a familiar topic to many and "Coming Out of the Cave": The Story of Shimon bar Yohai, examining how Jews should engage with the outside world.
She will also discuss the realities of contemporary Jewish family life with Jeneration Project Worker Zahavit Shalev and Judith Williams, director of RSY-Netzer and Jeneration.
Radlett and Bushey Reform Synagogue's Rabbi Paul Freedman will discuss the nature of suffering as well as comparisions between Darth Vader and Elisha ben Abuyah in "The Jedi, the Rabbi and the Dark Side".
Rabbi Deborah Kahn-Harris will examine the possibilities of "Torah Commentary as a Vehicle for Social Change" as well as debating if "The Future is Female".
This is just a snapshot of what is on offer at Limmud, described by the JC as "jewel in the crown of Anglo-Jewry". If you decide to attend you are sure to understand why this is the case. Click here to find out more, there is still time to book.
