Mazel Tov to Sha'arei Tsedek

Sha'arei Tsedek: North London Reform Synagogue (founded in 1961 as Southgate & District Reform Synagogue) marked 50 years of community life with a special service and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by the Mayor of Barnet, Cllr. Lisa Rutter

Guests at the special service at Sha'arei Tsedek - North London Reform Synagogue MPs Theresa Villiers and David Burrowes, local councillors and Brian Coleman, the area's London Assembly Member attended the service led by Principal Rabbi Colin Eimer.

The Movement for Reform Judaism was represented by its Chief Executive Ben Rich and representatives from the Movement's other communities were also present to mark the special occasion with founder members, past chairs of the synagogue council, members and their guests.

Speaking at the event The Mayor said: "I am delighted to be here at such a significant occasion in the life of this community and am honoured to unveil the commemorative plaque and to join in the celebrations for your Golden Jubilee."

Ben Rich presented Estelle Gilston with a certificatePrior to the plaque unveiling Life President, Estelle Gilston welcomed members and guests to the special service. Following the service Ben Rich, Chief Executive, MRJ presented Estelle with a certificate to mark this significant occasion in the history of the synagogue.

Linda Cooke, Chair of Council said: "The Golden Jubilee is a very significant milestone in the life of Sha'arei Tsedek and today we honour and remember those whose vision, enthusiasm and endeavour first gave life to our community.  We also bring to mind those who have played and those who continue to play their part in the journey which has been undertaken since those early days."

She continued: "Looking back after 50 years it is clear that we have much to be proud of and, looking forward, that we have
many challenges to face.  I hope that today's service will be a true celebration of our past successes and a source of strength as we move forward on the journey."
