Mitzvah Day 2011: Get Involved

Mitzvah Day 2011 takes place on Sunday 20th November. A Jewish led day of social action, it's when we give our time rather than our money to help others. Events will take place across the Movement's communities.


A number of Reform communities are taking part in this year's Mitzvah Day which takes place on Sunday 21st November. Below is a selection of the events taking place in Reform communities. Please contact the synagogues directly if you would like to take part in the planned activities and click on the name of the community for full event details.

Alyth (Northwestern Reform Synagogue) have a busy programme of events for Mitzvah Day including a food collection with the local Christian and Hindu communities outside Sainsbury's in Golders Green, working with Kisharon and providing food and workshops for refugees.

Cardiff Reform Synagogue has been collecting toothbrushes to send to Israel for dental volunteers who give up their holiday time to treat families who cannot afford dental treatment. On Mitzvah Day itself, the cheder children will be packing shoe boxes with Chanukah gifts to send to a children's home in Israel.

Edgware & District Reform Synagogue will be full of activity with collections of goods and food for Camp Simcha, Homeless Action Barnet, Norwood, Barnado's and destitute asylum seekers amongst other organisations. There will be several activities for children and young people including singing for the residents of Whitechurch Lodge.

Finchley Reform Synagogue has a busy day planned including working on a local nature reserve, green projects, collecting unused foreign currency and new toys and gifts for Barnardo’s, judaica for their twinned community in Polotsk, Belarus, toothbrushes, flannels and soap for the shul's winter shelter project and used spectacles for Vision Aid.

At Harlow Jewish Community on Mitzvah Day the children of the community, together with volunteers, will bake cakes and then take them to Hamstel House, a care unit attached to Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow.

Hendon Reform Synagogue will be collecting gifts for children in hospital, visiting residents of the Rela Goldhill Jewish Care home, collecting vital supplies for Homeless Action Barnet and World Jewish Relief as well as working on many other projects.

Kol Chai - Hatch End Jewish Community will be making gift boxes for Barnado's, working on cleaning up Stanmore Common, and teenagers will have the chance to meet, talk and work with some refugees of the same age.

Manchester Reform Synagogue will be entertaining the residents of Brookvale, cleaning up Southern Cemetery and collecting food from shoppers at the Co-op in West Didsbury.

North West Surrey Synagogue will be collecting food donations for the Thames Homeless Project at four supermarkets in Surrey. Last year thanks to their work every homeless person in the Thames area got a Christmas box.

Radlett & Bushey Reform Synagogue are joining forces with Radlett United Synagogue, the Radlett churches, the local Hindu temple and the Parish Council to clear undergrowth, plant trees and create a community picnic area followed by an interfaith tea.

Sinai Synagogue, Leeds is encouraging people to join the Anthony Nolan register which they can do at the Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Community Centre on Mitzvah Day.

West London Synagogue will have a collectathon, cake bake and making peace bracelets.

Wimbledon and District Synagogue will be taking part in a variety of projects including knitting to make blankets for World Jewish Relief, making soup to distribute to members of the community when the need arises andmaking cards to put into welcome packs for newly arrived refugee children through the Separated Child Foundation.

Staff at the Movement for Reform Judaism offices are also getting involved collecting judaica for Jewish Child's Day and food items for Homeless Action Barnet.
