National Inter Faith Week

National Inter Faith Week in England, Wales and Northern Ireland begins on Sunday, 20th November and many Reform rabbis will be involved in planned events. The Week aims to help strengthen inter faith relations; highlight the contributions which faith communities make to society; and develop dialogue between those of religious and those of non-religious beliefs.

National Inter Faith WeekAs National Inter Faith Week begins, Ben Rich is taking part in a conversation on 21st November at the House of Lords on the public policy implications of faith and community, with Eric Pickles, Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks, the Archbishop of Canterbury and other faith leaders. The discussion will be exploring aspects of how faith communities contribute to society; continue to develop strong patterns of inter faith understanding and practical cooperation; and engage with wider society for the common good.

Rabbi Jackie Tabick of North West Surrey Synagogue is Chair of the World Congress of Faiths and is taking part in a number of events including a tea and discussion for a Jewish and Muslim women's group, the Inter Faith Week launch event, a lecture with Revd. Marcus Braybrooke on the Pharisees in Trinity Centre, Guildford and attending 'Living Together: Perspectives on Culture and Faith' as guest speaker. Rabbi Michael Hilton will also be taking part in the Harrow event as well as 'A Three Faiths Dialogue' between local churches, synagogues and mosques on Wednesday 23rd November 2011 discussing Jewish festival foods.

Kol Chai will open its doors with an 'Open Shabbat' on 26th November with a Torah breakfast study session beginning at 09:15 followed by the Shabbat morning service at 10.30. On November 24th, the Edgware & District Reform Synagogue interfaith committee is putting together a Christian-Jewish dialogue on music in religion, and this will take place in a local church. Rabbi Danny Smith will be taking part in an event on 22nd November on behalf of the Council of Imams and Rabbis. He will be part of a panel of rabbis who will explain Judaism, and respond to questions at the East London Mosque.

Southend and District Reform Synagogue are hosting an 'Any Questions Evening' on Saturday night, 26th November with a panel which includes Rabbi Warren Elf (in the Chair), Cllr. Ted Lewin, Rob Walters (Southend Community Cohesion Officer), David Fairweather (Membership Manager Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust) and Jackie Jones (Essex Police). Rabbi Larry Becker of Sukkat Shalom Reform Synagogue will be participating in an interfaith panel discussion in Ilford.

Rabbi Barbara Borts of Newcastle Reform Synagogue will particpate in an event at Durham University on Wednesday, 23rd November. Leo Baeck College participated in the twinning project between Muslim and Jewish women which took place in Weybridge synagogue and on 23rd November, members of Leo Baeck College and the Muslim college planted (metaphorically, due to the time of the year) a fig tree and an olive tree. The trees will be planted properly on the college site later on in the year.
