New Rabbi joins Radlett and Bushey Synagogue

At 29, Rabbi David Mitchell is one of the youngest ministers in the Movement for Reform Judaism and has just been formally appointed as Radlett and Bushey Reform Synagogue's Associate Rabbi, joining Rabbi Paul Freedman.
Rabbis Bayfield, Mitchell and Freedman and Gill BurnA packed synagogue saw his induction ceremony at which Rabbi Dr. Tony Bayfield, Head of the Movement for Reform Judaism,  delivered the sermon and Rabbi Mitchell responded.

Gill Burn, Chairwoman of the community, explained that David had already been with the congregation for a couple of years during his studies at Leo Baeck College, acting as Head of the Religion School. 'We know him already therefore,' said Gill, 'and are thrilled to offically appoint him to a rabbinical position.  As one of the fastest growing Reform communities, we need two ministers to meet the needs of our many members of all ages and David has already endeared himself to those with whom he has had dealings.'

Synagogue Vice President Barry Hyman said,' We began as a small community of 20 families in 1971, meeting in each others houses in Bushey and, due to the kindness of local Christian communities, in the United Reform Church Hall and Rosary Priory.  We led services ourselves and little dreamt of becoming one of the largest communities in the Movement.  Now during the Jewish New Year, we again thank our Christian neighbours at Christ Church Radlett, who allow us to erect a marquee on their lawn for the High Holyday services.  This generosity was repaid by arranging its use for a free concert which took place on 23rd September, in support of local charities, including the Hospice.'
