OneVoice statement on events in Gaza
Monday, 12 January 2009
Like everyone, the OneVoice team has watched the escalation of violence in Gaza and the south of Israel unfold with a mix of great sadness, and a frustration that we haven’t been able to do more to find a lasting solution.
We have had many enquiries as to our views on what’s going on at the moment, and the welfare of our teams, so we wanted to write quickly to touch base with supporters.
First of all, our staff in the region are all safe and unharmed. Mowaffaq Alami, whom some of you have met when he visited London, spoke with our office yesterday afternoon, and thankfully neither he nor any of the Gaza staff have been physically harmed. They are suffering the privations in common with the wider population and are living in fear and under massive stress. Very sadly, family members of our staff and board members, have been killed in the violence, and we are all thinking of them during this extremely difficult time.
We have of course maintained constant communication with our West Bank and Israeli offices, and while everyone is terribly impacted by the violence, they are all currently safe and well. Everyone is remaining resolute that our work will go on once this terrible period is over and indeed that it will be more important than ever for One Voice to be active and engaged, but are realistic that this temporary reality makes it very difficult for our teams to act. Indeed, in the midst of this dangerous atmosphere, all OneVoice teams are still trying to spread the message that the majority of Israelis and Palestinians are desperate for a way out, and eager to find a lasting two-state solution.
OneVoice Europe wants to send our thanks to our supporters, and our solidarity to all those suffering at the moment. Unfortunately, the further violence escalates, the more it exposes our need to work harder in realising our goals. The majority on both sides want to see a two-state solution realised, and we need to do all we can to ensure that their voices are heard; particularly at times such as these, when moderation is in danger of being drowned out.
We will remain in touch, and look forward to continuing to count on your support at this most critical of junctures. Our office is of course happy to answer any queries, or address any concerns that you may have.
