Our Attitudes Towards Israel
Thursday, 29 July 2010
Head of the Movement for Reform Judaism, Rabbi Dr. Tony Bayfield responds to the most extensive and innovative survey to be conducted on the attitudes of Jews in Britain towards Israel."The group of people who prompted the JPR survey on attitudes to Israel have done something remarkable and exemplary. They have said 'let's find out what the community is thinking and connect what we say and do to where the community are'. That was not only brave but fully reflective of the approach of Reform Judaism - start where people are, don't assume that you know without asking and resist being certain that you know better anyway.
The community turns out to be strong, courageous and clear.
It has the strength to recognise and defend Israel's need for security - even if that need for security leads Israel to take actions which don't sit well with British public opinion.
It has the courage to recognise that Israel will only achieve lasting security through a just settlement with the Palestinians based upon two viable states. That leads to giving priority to whatever actions are necessary to advance the cause of peace and to being vociferous about actions - for instance by the government of Israel - which appear to run counter to pursuing a just settlement.
The Reform Movement's position on Israel is shown to be reflective of where the mainstream of the community stands. We love Israel with all our heart, soul and might. We regard Israel's security as paramount. We say loudly and clearly that Israel's long term security can only be achieved through a just and equitable settlement based on two viable states."
