PrintE-mail

At Bloomsbury Auctions on 29th January 2009, Leo Baeck College sold a collection of works illustrated and inscribed in books by the famous Jewish artist, Marc Chagall realising a sum of £250,000.
The auction which attracted a large number of buyers, both in the UK and overseas, was arranged by Leo Baeck College in respect of a collection of 49 illustrated and inscribed books by Marc Chagall that had been donated in 1993.  In recognition that these works are not a component of the College’s study programme or of its research interests, the Board of Governors decided to sell them at auction in order to raise assets for the development of the College, particularly its scholarship fund and the development of its library collection for the teaching of rabbis and educators.

Rabbi Dr Michael Shire, Vice Principal of Leo Baeck College, commented “we are delighted at the outcome of this successful auction as this will enable us to realise our vision of development for the College as we move into its next phase of growth and development.” The College has retained a series of photographs of Marc Chagall, uniquely taken in his atelier while working, as well as a copy of a book of drawings for the bible including 24 lithographs, printed in colours of biblical scenes.
