Rabbi Mark Winer to Retire
Monday, 13 September 2010West London Synagogue have announced the retirement of Rabbi Mark Winer.
Born in Utah and raised in Texas, Rabbi Winer has served the community as Senior Rabbi since 1998.
Rabbi Winer served as a congregational rabbi for over thirty years in the United States. He has been involved in several international events, including resolving the issues that led to the treaty between Israel and the Vatican. He was also a key negotiator for the release of Ethiopian Jews and the resolution to the dispute over the Carmelite convent at Auschwitz.
Noting Rabbi Winer's work in ensuring the development of the community, West London Chairman Jonathan Lass said: "Mark will best be remembered by most of us for making tikkun olam - repairing the world - a priority for West London Synagogue. Highlights included his two years as chaplain to two different Lord Mayors of Westminster, our seder in Parliament, many interfaith services in our synagogue and the unique strategic partnership between the synagogue, the Central Mosque and St Ethelburga's Centre for Peace and Reconciliation of the Church of England."
He is a published author and is married to Suellen (a certified Public Accountant) with whom he has three adult children and two grandchildren.
It as also been announced that Simon Myers, UK Chief Finance Officer of Swiss Bank Corp and UBS, has been appointed as the synagogue's new Executive Director.
