Thursday, 13 August 2009
It is with sadness that we announce that Rabbi Sonny Herman, born 1929 died August 8th, 2009, 18 Av 5769.
An early graduate of the Leo Baeck College in 1966, Rabbi Herman together with Rabbi Lawrence Rigal led the first joint RSGB ULPS Tour to Israel in 1968.
He served the Southgate and District Synagogue until 1977 then worked in the Netherlands with Holocaust survivors returning to England in 1980 to work with survivors at their centre in Hendon.
Through a chance meeting with the president of the Thanet community in Margate Rabbi Herman ministered to that community for many years commuting from his home in the Netherlands to Margate twice a month.
This community honoured him with the title Rabbi Emeritus two years at a service attended by many members of the Thanet Community together with Head of the Reform Movement Rabbi Dr. Tony Bayfield who was accompanied by David and Hannah Jacobs.
Sonny leaves a wife and a large extended family.
Zichrono livrachah, May his name be for a blessing.
