Reform, Liberal and Masorti Rabbis Discuss the Meaning of Life
Monday, 26 October 2009
Jeneration will be running a Beit Midrash (house of learning) on 27th – 29th November in the Worcestershire countryside. This year, Reform, Liberal and Masorti rabbis will all be teaching at the ‘mini-yeshiva’ and seriously engaging with participants’ questions about life, God and halacha. The event is supported by the Liberal, Masorti and Reform Movements. In 2008, 12 students and young adults spent a weekend secluded in the Birmingham Lickey Hills, with a group of rabbis, huddled around Jewish texts. The learning was serious, open and lively. Underlying all the study were real questions about ‘life, the universe and everything’.
This year the same location will play host to more participants, and Rabbis Shoshana Boyd Gelfand, Chaim Weiner, Mark Goldsmith and Pete Tobias. Jeneration is creating this small-scale yeshiva for the participants to bring their own questions as well as to delve into the rabbis’ specialist subjects.
Jeneration Director, Judith Williams commented: "There is a real need for alternatives for serious learning, places where Jews can learn from their tradition and each other, in an authentic and pluralistic way. The ‘Open Talmud Project’ which took place in July, sponsored by the Moishe House, was another of these initiatives. It’s not for everyone, but there are many for whom textual learning in a way that feels comfortable and accessible for them has not yet been on offer. Jeneration intends to meet this need."
