Reform Youth are Winners
Monday, 14 December 2009
Over 160 young people were honoured for their contributions to Reform Jewish life, community and society at the second Community Youth Awards Reception.
Held on Sunday 6th December at Edgware and District Reform Synagogue in front of an audience of over 250 people, the Reception honoured the winners of both the Jack Petchey Awards and Massuot Community Youth Awards.
The event was opened by 17 year old Mike Perham who earlier this year completed his solo circumnavigation of the world becoming the youngest person to do so. He is now hoping to raise £24,000 for two charities, the Tall Ships Youth Trust and Save the Children. The Reform Movement’s Youth and Community Worker commented that Mike is a superb example of what young people can achieve given the right support and encouragement noting that his inspirational and motivational story was enthusiastically received.
The Jack Petchey Grants Officer for the Reform Movement, Nikki Bush, introduced the Awards with a film about the work of the Jack Petchey Foundation. The Foundation gives the Reform Movement nearly £20,000 to distribute amongst the 87 Jack Petchey Award winners from 13 synagogues in London and Essex. The winners from each synagogue were presented with their medallions by Mike Perham.
The Massuot Awards followed a performance by the Alyth Youth Singers. These awards were established by the Reform Movement and RSY-Netzer to reward young people in all our communities across the country. There are six awards for young people aged 8-18, based around the concept of Tikkun Olam. Three awards are given to adult helpers and one for Innovation in Community Youth Provision. This year saw an impressive 80 nominations for the 10 categories, representing young people in over 18 Reform synagogues. The Awards were sponsored by the Alan Senitt Memorial Trust, the Assembly of Reform Rabbis UK, the Jewish Volunteer Network, Jeneration, the New Israel Fund, Pro Zion, RSY-Netzer and Streetwise. Thanks to these sponsors, each winner has £200 to spend on their community youth provision or project.
The nominations were reviewed by a panel that put forward three finalists from whom they chose a winner.
The event was closed by Judith Williams, Director of Youth for the Movement for Reform Judaism. Summing up, she evoked the story of Joseph from this weeks parsha, that of a young man dreaming of achievement.
Commenting on the success of the event, the Reform Movement’s Youth and Community Worker added: “Well done to all our Jack Petchey Award winners and Massuot Nominees, you are a credit to yourselves, your communities and Klal Yisrael.”
