RSY-Netzer Goes Wild for the North
Thursday, 08 April 2010
RSY-Netzer held its Wild 'n' Wacky Netzer Venture Shabbaton at Sinai Synagogue in Leeds on the weekend of 26th - 27th March. This weekend is one in a series of Netzer Venture Shabbatonim for participants aged 8 - 15 from across the North of England.
The young people attending this weekend were joined by the madrichim (leaders) in training who are currently taking part in the RSY-Netzer Course Hadracha as well as some of the leaders that they have met on Shemesh and Sheleg. People were brought together from six Northern communities: Jackson's Row (Manchester Reform Synagogue), Menorah (Cheshire Reform Congregation), Sha'arei Shalom (North Manchester), Sheffield and District, Sinai (Leeds) and Southport.
The Shabbaton was themed around heroes; the participants were challenged about what they believe makes a hero and who their heroes are. The participants looked at biblical heroes such as Moses and Miriam to as well as modern day Jewish groups in Israel and the Diaspora. Some of these topics were explored in the creative prayer services that were led by our madrichim and in our arts and crafts Torah service on Shabbat morning.
The event proved to be a massive success and even resulted in some of the children asking their parents not to pick them up because they didn't want to leave. This feeling was also shared by the madrichim who only half an hour after the event commented that they "missed it already".
