Monday, 05 December 2011
Sha’arei Tsedek: North London Reform Synagogue will be joined by the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Lisa Rutter and the Member of Parliament for Chipping Barnet, The Rt. Hon. Theresa Villiers MP for a special service to commemorate and celebrate the synagogue's 50th anniversary.
The service will take place at the shul on Shabbat morning, Saturday 10th December. It will be lead by Principal Rabbi, Colin Eimer with contributions from Estelle Gilston (Life President) and Linda Cooke (Chair of Council). Founder members, past chairs, newest members and young members of the community will all be invited to carry out mitzvot during the service.
Local councillors and the area's London Assembly Member will attend as well as representatives of local faith groups. The Movement for Reform Judaism will be represented by its Chief Executive Ben Rich and representatives from the Movement's other communities will also be present to mark the special occasion.
After the service, the Mayor will unveil a plaque to commemorate and celebrate the Golden Jubilee year of the synagogue.
Linda Cooke, Chair of Council says: "At Sha’arei Tsedek (founded in 1961 as Southgate & District Reform Synagogue), we are very proud of our reputation of being a forward looking, inclusive and welcoming congregation with a strong ethos of engagement with the secular as well as the Jewish world. Our Golden Jubilee year has been both exciting and challenging. Most importantly, it has put into perspective the many achievements of our first 50 years and highlighted the need for us to ensure a flourishing and sustainable future for our wonderful community."
The community have enjoyed a number of special Golden Jubilee Shabbat services and social events throughout the year and are looking forward to a spectacular klezmer party to round off the programme of events in February.
