Sir Sigmund Honoured by Hebrew University
Tuesday, 29 November 2011
Sir Sigmund Sternberg KC*SG, Life President of the Movement for Reform Judaism, has been conferred an Honorary Fellowship of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
"I have lived with the knowledge and admiration for the Hebrew University of Jerusalem all of my adult life, and I am deeply honoured and most sincerely moved", commented Sir Sigmund Sternberg at the ceremony of conferment of an Honorary Fellowship on Tuesday 22nd November.
The ceremony, held at LJCC (Ivy House) in Golders Green, was attended by dignitaries and friends across the political and religious spectrum with Lady Hazel and other members of his family also present.
President of the Hebrew University, Professor Menahem ben Sasson, attending the event which only on very rare occasions takes place outside Jerusalem, talked of Sir Sigmund's remarkable and tireless work to promote inter-faith dialogue and tolerance, including the founding the Three Faiths Forum and later in 1997 establishing the Sir Sigmund Sternberg Prizes and annual lecture for inter-faith understanding at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. "Siggy", added Prof ben Sasson "as a frequent visitor to our university you know that you only have to look around any of the Hebrew University campuses to see and feel amongst our students and faculty members a spirit of openness, pluralism and tolerance. Intellectual pursuit, academia and research know no boundaries".
Sir Sigmund later added "had my parents carried me at the age of four to the opening of the Hebrew University in 1925, I could have personally witnessed that great historical moment. Now, some 85 years later to have been associated so closely and personally with one of the greatest creations of the Jewish People is a distinction beyond parallel".
