Social Action and Sukkot

Sukkot is a time when we are reminded of our vulnerability and of the times when our homes, as Jews, have been far from secure. Here we look at the work of our communities in supporting those who are vulnerable and homeless. Many of our synagogues are involved in this work but we highlight three in particular.Finchley Reform: A Simple Way to Make a Difference
Finchley Reform Synagogue will open up as an emergency shelter for homeless people this winter. Every Thursday night for three months from January to March the synagogue will be open to up to 15 people who have no home and no bed, providing them with a hot meal, a warm place to sleep, breakfast – and hospitality.

Sinai Synagogue: The Jewish Imperative to Welcome Strangers
Members of Sinai Synagogue in Leeds decided to use preparations for Sukkot to help those in need by donating food to a local project for homeless and vulnerable people. This is just part of the synagogue's ongoing engagement with the wider community and social action causes.

Wimbledon: Working with other Faith Groups
Wimbledon and District Synagogue has been involved with the Faith In Action Homeless Project for many years. FIA is a charity made up of a team of three part time staff and over 40 volunteers, many of whom are from different faith groups in the community. They work with a range of agencies to support homeless, precariously housed and other marginalised people within the London Borough of Merton.
